I needed a vacation from life. Between heartburn, morning sickness and pregnant brain, it was neccessary to escape the Alberta heat. So off I was to go to Ontario to hang out with Lori and her family and Colin was coming with me.
Red eye into Toronto was sold out, so 7am to Toronto worked, changed the car reservation and we arrived at Calgary Airport at 415 for check in. HUGE line up already. There were 8 seats, we were 7 and 8. Looked good. But this particular employee travelling with two kids whined and complained so we got bumped. So we run off to the other gate in hopes we can get on into Hamilton. Its a new plane with 166 seats. 165 sold... there's room but only one can go. "I can go jump?" I ask nicely. "Let's check" and off she runs. "Cleared to go... RUN, you're last on."
Off we go and Colin gets shoved somewhere in the middle of the aircraft with all my bags and my leftover breakfast and I crawl happily into the cockpit to fly in the jumpseat.
I have one word for that experience: "WOW".
Now remember, rental car is in Toronto, we're in Hamilton. No one has any cars as its a long weekend. Pleading and begging and pure and simple luck we get a car... 2006 Dodge Charger.
NICE car. 3.5 Hemi, speed sensitive steering... Colin decided to see what she could do... 170 and she still had power. There was some quirks of the car I didn't like. The cruise control stem is awkwardly place and the vent placement is poor and the top 1/3 of the windshield wouldn't stay clear of condensation and holy fucking bad placement of the backdoor locks - its way the hell n gone at the very end of the door behind the windows, hidden - NO WAY to reach from the front seat.
Drove out of Hamilton at 120pm.. the traffic was absolutely horrific. Why? Who knows. No reason for it. From Hwy 7 & 400 to Orillia took until 5pm... should have been 2 hrs. We got to North Bay at 7 - finally found Lori around 830.
Sunday morning we headed to the cottage. Its about an hr outside of Sudbury on an island. We got there in the afternoon and completely relaxed. We stayed up til about 3, they were drinking and talking and listening to music and just enjoying being on the lake.
Monday we spent relaxing and swimming and fishing and then we had to be off the island before dark in order to start driving back as our flight out of Hamilton (gotta return the rental back there, sadly) was at 745am.
We got in the car at 954 pm and were in Parry Sound by 11 & wasted 30 mins at a Tim Horton's before giving up and then in Toronto by 115am. We were going to tour around Toronto but nothing is open and decided to go to Niagara Falls instead. In Niagara Falls and puddle splashing by 230am. We headed back to Hamilton and were in the parking lot by 4am and I was asleep instantly.
Breakfast and a short wait and on the plane and ready to go. Seatbelt sign off and my head was down on the table tray on my pillow and I slept to Calgary.
Then I got home and heard about the crash in Toronto. A miracle no one died and the injuries were minimal. I am very interested to see what the pilot has to say as to what happened.
I had my doctor's appt yesterday afternoon and I have to go for an EKG today and pick up the fish that my mom was fish-sitting.
All in all, eventful but relaxing weekend.
